This African Lily lives up to its name, ‘Arctic Star’, when it flowers in late June. Its pure white globes, consisting of multiple trumpet shaped blooms, look stunning when displayed in borders, containers or as cut flowers. The flowers brighten up the garden for ages, not fading until September, and the semi-evergreen linear foliage will retain its grey-green colour throughout the winter months. Indeed, the hardy perennial is remarkably resilient and can survive temperatures well below freezing. Agapanthus ‘Arctic Star’ therefore provides excellent ground cover all year round. Plant Agapanthus in a sunny position in moist, well drained soil. Water well to settle the soil. Alternatively, grow Agapanthus in containers using soil based compost such as John Innes No.3 and position in full sun.

Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season. Leave faded Agapanthus flower stems intact to enjoy their architectural qualities until they become blackened by frost. Border grown plants will benefit from the winter protection of an autumn mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost. Container grown Agapanthus plants can be moved to a frost free position over winter.
